Bordeaux 89/90 - Tasting
Bordeaux 89/90 - Tasting
Last Friday we had the pleasure to welcome Jeff Leve, Rainer Guntermann and Michael Eder in Berlin. The tasting took place in the Rest. “First Floor”, one of the best restaurant in town.

Instead of Champagne, we served this famous Riesling and it was fine start. Opulent fruit flavors due to the hot vintage 2003, but a splendid minerality balanced this out. As always Mr. Dönnhoff is the master of Riesling.

I had the feeling that this wine had a little mistake, as it showed not such good. It seems as we had also a bad bottle like a few weeks ago. One wine-dealer delivered some faulty bottles.

For the beginning a pirate! This is a tuscan Cabernet Sauvignon from the famous producer Isole e Olena.Typical tuscany due the high acdity. Prune, strawberry, sweaty and needs food as a companion . Good to see the aging potential of this wine, as it is fine to drink right now.

Second wine from Lafleur. Very smelly nose. On the palate very portwine-like.
Chocolate, black fruits and charming easy-drinking. Has reached the peak, drink it now!

1990 Pensees de Lafleur, Pomerol, Bordeaux, France
Very tannic, Green paprika, Quite closed or almost dead?! Was not a pleasure to
drink.

Cork-Bouquet. For me typical Figeac, but I was wrong. In the mouth no cork, but the bottle was not completely correct.

Fine perfume of praline. Great palate, red fruits, chocolate, earth and a long finish.
Surprisingly, after 10min. the wine clearly declines. First, he was my favourite of the flight, but after some minutes Canon-La-Gaffeliere goes ahead. Drink this wine now.
91-92

At the beginning a little bit shy, but once again like 4-5 years ago this wine showed his outstanding quality. What a fresh, elegant flavor profile. A basket of red fruits and tobacco. Great acid-backbone. Silky elegance and a looong finish. Subtle stuff and once again the freshness is stunning. No hurry to drink this wine. Chapeau, perfect prototype for St.-Emilion!
94-95

Very focused bouquet of leather. Disappointing flavor profile. Green paprika, no ripe flavors. A few years ago I had a great bottle, but this one is disapppointing.
85-88

Opulent, baroque style. Chocolate, plum, blackberry.....very ripe right bank flavors.
Always a pleasure to drink such a sexy wine. The palate is pure velvet. A wine of magnificent richness and length - gorgeous!
94

Prune, chocolate and in general a fine fruitsweetness. BUT short on the palate.

1989 La Conseillante, Pomerol, Bordeaux,
cork!

1989 Montrose, St. Estephe, Bordeaux, France
DIVINE. Mocca, black fruits, black chocolate with a touch of minerality. Completely different stylistic to the ´90, much more supple and seductive. No horse! And not such powerful and intellectual or challenging like ´90. Marvellous length and aftertaste.Or as a collegue wrote "this is a wine you should not analyse - just drink and enjoy".
97

Very focused flavors, espresso and roasted almonds. Medium body with silky tannins and gorgeous definition and balance. Aristocratic! The harmony and youth of this 89 is impressive. Classic Bordeaux and great future.
