Germany vs. Austria - Tasting
Germany vs. Austria - Tasting
Last week-end my friend Jürgen Klucken and I were invited by Michael Quentel for a Riesling game Germany vs. Austria in Hamburg. I can tell you what a terrific night.........

Very lush, creamy flavors. Honey, butterscotch, nuts. Very short on the midpalate or almost a hole in the middle. Touch of boytritis, but I am wrong, as this is a vintage-based flavor profile. Typical opulent Angerer stilistic, but since the vintage 2005 the winemaker Kurti Angerer changed the stylistic of his wines. His Grüner Veltliner`s like "Kies", "Spies" and "Eichenstaude" are much, much more slim. Keep your eyes open for 2005 Eichenstaude and according to some german winefriends the vintage 2006 is promising for Angerer wines.

Closed nose. Grapefruite, noisette-chocolate, fine minerality and a lingering finish. Very dense on the palate, but in general the flavors are inhibited. Needs some time to come around and confirms the opinion of some german winefriends, "don´t touch 2004 at the moment". Very, very promising this Riesling and the predecessor of 03 caused some swirl in the german wine-world. Kühn is one of the TOP producer in the region Rheingau and open for experiments. I heared that he used amphoras for a wine-experiment like Gravner or the famous belgian winemaker in Sicily. Keep your eyes also open for his Rieslings from the parcel "Doosberg".

WOW, once again this winemaker showed his outstanding winemaking qualities.
Like a few weeks ago with the 01 vintage, this Riesling Spätlese trocken "Halenberg" is Riesling at its Best. Slate nose. Very powerful, dense fruit flavors of apricots combined with herbs and a breathtaking mineral depth. These flavors almost explode in the mouth. And are also very focused, like if someone would use a burning glass to burn these flavors on your palate. Trust me, his Rieslings from "Halenberg" you could buy blind every year.

Bombastic nose. Totaly different stilistic now. This is a opulent, oriental Riesling á la 1001 arabian nights. White chocolate, cinammon, blossoms, dried fruits. My friends were a bit disappointed because of some bitter notes on the finish. I enjoyed this Riesling and I am certain they will shake their head because of my high score.

After the opulent Riesling from Knoll, this Riesling Auslese trocken tastes more like a lemonade. Very subtle, delicate Riesling. Grapefruite, jasmine, blossoms and a good acdity. Very fresh flavors and splendid minerality. I would say that I am not fair with my scoring, as this is really a world-class Riesling.

This Riesling from 60 years old vines is too young to judge him correctly at the moment. At the beginning, he was one-dimensional for me because of his youth. But no doubt, a very promising and fascinating Riesling from the Mosel/Bremmer Calmont. Bouquet of tangerine and violet. Powerful on the palate, tangerine, cinammon, spice and fig. Reminded me a little bit on the wines from Van Volxem. Also a bit salty on the finish. No doubt, intriguing Riesling with a mystic, unique stilistic. I would like to retaste this wine in a few years. Of course, my friends were totally thrilled about this Riesling, more than I.

A masterpiece! Baroque Riesling.......cinammon, dried apricots, nuts, botrytis and butterscotch/toffee. Yes, very, very opulent, but also a great freshness, acidity as a backbone. Needs not to hide against his famous counterparts in burgundy, really not. The stylistic is comparable to the "Hubacker" GG from Keller in Rheinhessen.
What a depth and complexity......Jeff Leve would say, "sex in the bottle".

Really a challenge right now for the "Kirchspiel" after the outstanding Pichler Riesling. No tiredness noticable and surprisingly fresh and alive. Grapefruite, herbs, spice and a gorgeous crisp, zingy minerality.Typical Kirchspiel......elegance, finesse and play! Surprisingly in a better condition than his big brother "Morstein" a few weeks ago. No hurry to drink this wine, but I don´t think he will get any better. Everything is perfect now, all elements go hand in hand. Will be always one of my favourite Riesling!

Another famous Smaragd-producer. Opulent, fat nose. Very alcoholic with flavors of
sage, apricots, medical and a high acidity. Something is wrong! Lack of harmony. Bottle-mistake? Very disappointing for a Smaragd "Singerriedel".

A Spätlese "Versteigerungswein"......

Very unique wine! Oxidativ style. Red currant, furry, wild blossoms. Very special and need some more years. A wine for the "Wilden Kerle"/tough guys.

Famous barnyard bouquet. Very elegant.....tar, black fruits, herbal, liquer, silky tannins and a great harmony. A bit short on the midpalate according to my friends, but an amazing elegant drinking pleasure. Yum, yum, long finish. Drink it now!

Quite young at the moment. Huge fruitsweetness with big flavors of plum, black fruits. I don´t understand this wine, at this moment. Really not my cup of tea this version.

Pure Cashmere! Pure Elegance!
20 years old and so astonishing young. Velvety tannins coates your mouth. Dense exotic, mystic flavor profile and such multi-layered, complex combined with a stunning depth. Tar, mocca, earth, and truffles. This wine, dark and passionate, makes me addicted........
